Review: Belmont Hotel, Manila

Like many people who go to the Philippines, we first touched down in Manila. Arriving in the early evening, and planning to leave early the next morning, we booked into Belmont Hotel for the night.

Close to the airport
Close to the airport

One of the key selling points of this hotel is its extremely convenient location. Belmont Hotel is located opposite the airport’s terminal 3, making it a great choice of hotel for people arriving / departing from that terminal. It’s also located in the middle of Newport City, a seemingly newish area full of hotels. This area is a massive contrast to the other streets surrounding the airport, but it definitely felt much safer to stay in.

Getting There

Belmont Hotel offers a very handy free shuttle bus service from the airport. We arrived at terminal 1 and headed straight to the waiting area for the bus. Unfortunately, we were told that we’d just missed it and the next one wasn’t for another hour. After a flight, the last thing we wanted to do was hang around. So, the lady at the shuttle bus desk helped us weigh up our alternative options: a private pick up service for 700RMB (but we hadn’t booked this in advance, so that was out of the question), a metered taxi (approximately 200-300PHP but the price could range from cheap to expensive depending on the traffic and the route the driver chooses to take), an “airport taxi” (which is a fixed rate car) or an Uber.

As we arrived around 5pm, we were aware rush hour traffic could be a problem, so we checked out how much an airport taxi would cost. I can’t remember the price exactly, but it was more than 2000PHP! Even after being in Manila for no more than 20 minutes, we knew that was a rip-off. Fortunately, the lady at the shuttle bus desk was extremely helpful and helped us book an Uber, saying we should pay no more than 250PHP – she even called the driver while we were still in the car to check he wasn’t going to charge us too much.

In the end, our Uber (along with a friendly and very knowledgable driver) set us back a mere 150PHP. Bargain!

Room and Facilities

Our room was clean, and very comfortable. The shower was hot and powerful, and an abundance of toiletries were supplied. What more can you ask for?

Room Tip: When checking in, see if there are any “corner rooms” available. Our corner room had two walls worth of windows, making it feel much lighter and more spacious.

We also made the most of the hotel’s fitness room and rooftop swimming pool. Despite being a very large hotel, the fitness room was rather small. However, only two other people used the room while we did, and only four others had checked in to use the fitness room before us that day. So, despite it being small, it sounds as though it’s rarely busy. The pool was large enough and looked beautiful all lit up at night.

We also chose to eat our dinner in the restaurant downstairs. Even though a buffet was offered, we chose to eat from the menu. The food was delicious and prices were also very reasonable. Harry even got a free glass of wine from the waiter… I feel he was getting hit on right in front of my eyes!

Value for Money

At 4487PHP(inc taxes), Belmont Hotel isn’t the cheapest of places to stay, but the services offered by the hotel, if not free, were very reasonably priced. We also felt that it was worth paying the price to stay here. The hotel was clean and safe, and there were plenty of things to keep us occupied.

All the staff at Belmont Hotel, from the girl working the shuttle bus service to the receptionists to the waiters and waitresses, were very pleasant and willing to help.

Cleanliness and comfort – the room was clean and the bed was a dream to sleep in.

Excellent location – if you’re looking for somewhere in a safe area of town, and also near to the airport, Belmont Hotel is ideal.

Facilities – the gym was small but well equipped, the swimming pool was beautiful and the restaurant downstairs offered tasty food at reasonable prices.

Helpful staff – everyone we encountered wanted to do anything and everything they could to help out and make our stay more enjoyable.

There were no real cons to this hotel. Even though it was more expensive than staying somewhere outside of Newport City, we felt the price was worth the facilities and comfort provided.

Would I recommend staying at Belmont Hotel?

YES! If you’re looking for somewhere to stay for a night before / after heading to the airport in Manila, then Belmont Hotel is a great choice. If, however, you’re looking to stay for more than a couple of days, then I’m not sure what else the area just outside of the hotel can offer you and it may be worth looking to stay somewhere located closer to the city centre.
